Below you will find a brief description of the educational experiences offered by Project Exploration this year. It is provided for your use in planning future programs and to avoid unnecessary schedule conflicts. Literature is available upon request for any of the trips listed, or call (480) 558-8383, toll free 1-877-559-0517.  Remember, these trips ARE NOT DESIGNED TO BE RECREATIONAL ACTIVITES, BUT RATHER EXTENDED LEARNING EXPERIENCES that students would not otherwise have an opportunity to receive. You, as their teacher, should be actively involved in pre-trip selective screening of the participants, trip discipline and group control, some trip instruction and participation, and involvement in travel time activities.
Please inform student participants that activities such as SWIMMING, TIDE POOLING, and SKATEBOARDING are not permitted due to the potentially hazardous nature of the activity as well as time constraints.

Oceanography

Oceans I
This two-night, two-day oceanographic experience includes an on-board floating laboratory activity, Sea World with Project Exploration's education program and the Stephen Birch Aquarium and Museum - the interpretive center for Scripps Institution of Oceanography or the Chula Vista Nature Conservancy.

Oceans II
This two-night, two-day oceanographic experience includes an on-board floating laboratory activity, Sea World with Project Exploration's education program and the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific. The overnight stay will be in the San Diego or Los Angeles area based on motel availability.

Oceans III
This two-night, two-day oceanographic experience includes a visit to Sea World with Project Exploration's educational program and an on-board floating laboratory activity. Overnight stay will be at a Los Angeles area motel. A two-hour laboratory experience will be provided at Cabrillo Marine Museum on Los Angeles Harbor.

Oceans IV
This two-night, two-day oceanographic experience includes a two-hour cruise to Catalina Island along with a glass-bottom boat activity with time for shopping and lunch in Avalon. Overnight stay will be at a Los Angeles area motel, with a two-hour laboratory experience at Cabrillo Marine museum the following day.

Oceans V
This two-night, two-day oceanographic experience emphasizes maritime history. As the students go "Back in Time" to the late 1800's and what it was like as a common seaman living aboard a ship. The students will be eating, working, and sleeping as they did at the turn of the century aboard the "Star of India". A floating lab activity and a visit to Cabrillo National Monument are also included.

Oceans VI
This one-night, two-day experience is the same as above except trip begins Saturday morning and returns Sunday evening with no floating lab activity.

Sea Quest
This mid-week trip travels overnight to San Diego for an early morning floating lab experience, followed by a visit to Sea World for Project Exploration's and/or Sea World's educational program with an early afternoon departure, then home.

Sea Quest II
Same as above with Friday night departure.

Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom
This two-night, two-day trip takes us to Rancho La Brea at Hancock Park in Los Angeles for an orientation about ice-age fossils and then on to visit the George C. Page Museum. In the afternoon we visit the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History with emphasis on dinosaur fossils, and an introduction to the Halls of Insects, Mammals, Birds and Marine Life. Overnight will be spent at a motel, followed by a visit to the San Diego Zoo. The zoo experience includes a bus tour, orientation at the reptile house and entrance to the children's zoo.

Animal Kingdom II
This two-night, two-day trip takes us overnight to Los Angeles for an oceanographic floating lab, then to Escondido for a visit to the world -famous Wild Animal Park. Overnight will be spent in a San Diego motel, followed by a visit to the San Diego Zoo. The zoo experience includes a bus tour, orientation at the reptile house and entrance to the children's zoo.

Animal Quest
This mid-week trip travels overnight to San Diego for an early morning floating laboratory experience, followed by a visit to the world famous San Diego Zoo, with an early afternoon departure, then home.

Archaeology

Archaeology
This journey back in time is a two-night, two-day ARCHAEOLOGY experience traveling to Cortez, Colorado for a visit to the Anasazi Heritage Museum and a guided tour of the Mesa Verde National Park ruins and museum. Overnight will be spent in Cortez and travel home via the Four Corners area, Wupatki and Sunset Crater National Monuments.

Grand Canyon Sunrise
This one-night, one-day Fall trip, finds us traveling all night to arrive at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon for sunrise. After sunrise, we will have breakfast and visit the IMAX Theater for an overview of the natural history and the impact of prehistoric and modern man on the Grand Canyon. Mid-day will find us visiting museums along the South Rim en route to Wupatki and Sunset Crater National Monuments. We will arrive home early that same evening.

Grand Canyon Quest
This one-night, two-day trip, finds us traveling through the morning to arrive at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, AZ. After a picnic lunch (not included) we travel to world famous Meteor Crater impact site and museum, near Winslow. After a full day studying geology and archaeology at Sunset Crater and Wupatki National Monuments, we will have dinner in Flagstaff then retire to a local motel. The second day we travel to the Grand Canyon to view the IMAX movie Hidden Secrets of the Grand Canyon. After a brief stop for souvenir shopping we head to Desert View overlook with an inspiring view of one of the natural wonders of the world. With a guided nature hike along the south rim we learn more about the local flora and fauna, geology, and history of this treasure of the southwest. After dinner in Flagstaff we head home.

Geology

Colorado River Quest This new trip is sure to add "bragging rights" to the students of Arizona. After traveling through the night, we will eat breakfast in Page then on to our fl oating raft experience down a very calm portion of the Colorado River. During our rafting experience we will be instructed on the geology and travel the path that begins the Grand Canyon. Stopping to see ancient petroglyphs and traveling through the famous Horseshoe Bend area will be educational highlights of the day. After a picnic lunch at Lees Ferry we'll board the bus again and stop at Wupatki and Sunset Crater National Monument to learn more about the fascinating geological and archaeological history of our great state. After dinner in Flagstaff, we will return to the school that evening.

CarlsbadCaverns
This two-night, two day, geology-oriented trip will visit the world-famous Carlsbad Caverns and White Sands National Monuments in New Mexico. After traveling all night, we will arrive at Carlsbad Caverns for a visit to the museum and walking tour of the great subterranean caverns. Overnight will be spent in a motel, followed by a visit to White Sands National Monument, Alamogordo Space Center, and International Space Hall of Fame.

Cavern Quest
This one day Fall trip includes a visit to Southern Arizona's historic Colossal Cave south of Tucson. The visit will include a guided tour of Colossal Cave and a guided nature walk of approximately one half mile in the Upper Sonoran desert. Also included in this experience is a visit to one of the worlds most recently discovered caves, Kartchner Caverns. This trip has limited availability due to Kartchner Caverns scheduling limitations.

Crater Quest
This one day, Fall trip includes a visit to world famous Meteor Crater impact site and museum, near Winslow, a picnic stop for lunch (food not included), a visit to the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff (noted for its discovery of the planet Pluto), then to Sunset Crater National Monument where we will be instructed about geology as we walk along the lava trail nature walk.

Geology Quest
This one-day Fall trip includes a visit to the geologic sinkhole known as Montezuma's Well. We then travel on to the spectacular Oak Creek Canyon with its "petrified" sand dune formations and volcanic columnar jointing. The Museum of Northern Arizona and Sunset Crater National Monument with its famous lava trail nature walk, finish off the trip.

Mineral Quest
This one-day fall trip includes a visit to the ASARCO open pit copper mine and learning center and Mineral Discovery Center south of Tucson. We travel to historic Bisbee, Arizona for a first hand experience at the Copper Queen Mine as we travel inside the mountain to view an underground mining operation.

Space

Aerospace
This two-night, two-day AEROSPACE experience takes us to the Challenger Learning Center at the University of California, Dominguez Hills in Long Beach, California. Here the students will participate in a simulated space mission. We will then visit the California Museum of Science and Industry which will also be our lunch stop. With the afternoon visit to some of California's premier museums. We will rretire to a local motel. After our overnight motel stay, we will visit the San Diego Aerospace Museum at Balboa Park.

Astronomy
This one-day Fall trip, includes a visit to Kitt Peak National Observatory near Tucson, a picnic stop for lunch on the peak (food not included) and a visit to the Grace H. Flandrau Planetarium for museum visit and planetarium program. We will arrive home early that same evening.

Arizona History

Old West Quest
This one-day Fall trip includes an "adventure" to historic Bisbee, Arizona for a visit to the famous Copper Queen Mine. With a hard-hat, lamp and rain slicker, you will ride a mining "mule" train into the mountain to see the working of the formerly rich copper, gold and silver mine. You will also see the Lavender Pit Surface Copper Mine and visit the Bisbee Mining Museum. From Bisbee we will travel to Tombstone to experience, as time permits; Boothill, OK Corral historic tour (no shootout), a brief stage coach ride (20-30 minutes), or Tombstone's Historama (a blend of motion pictures and historic photos to tell Tombstone's story).

Architecture

Architecture Quest
This one night, one day Fall trip finds us traveling all night to arrive in Las Vegas, Nevada to begin our visit "AROUND THE WORLD" of architecture. We will see architectural transplants such as the Empire State building, Statue of Liberty, Canals of Venice, the Arc de Triumph, Eiffel Tower, Egyptian Obelisk, plus a walk through tour of Hoover Dam en route home.

Theater/Drama

Movie Quest
This one-night, one-day Fall trip is for those interested in art, particularly product and set design and the world of movie production. The students will visit Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California where a staff member will instruct the students about the practical application of art in everyday items such as airplane interiors, perfume bottles and sunglasses, with an emphasis on movie production and set design. The balance of the day will be spent at Universal Studios with emphasis on how movies are made. This is a visit to Universal Studios, not a behind-the-scenes tour.

The above trips have been designed, field-tested and redesigned to offer the most experience for the money and practical use of time. Any changes in the basic format of a trip tend to escalate the cost and increase the chances of timing errors and scheduling conflicts. PROJECT EXPLORATION, however, will make every effort to meet your classroom educational needs.
